The perfect mountain bike weekend in: Brixen, the best trails, the most beautiful tours

The region around Bressanone (Brixen) in Northern Italy is another top location for mountain biking. Already on the southern side of the Alps, not as far away as the Lake Garda, high mountains, super singletrails and the one or the other ascent climb help in form of cableways. Due to the lifts one can add a few more depths into the tours per day.

Here are my favorites for a extended weekend.

Day 1, To the Sass de Putia (Peitlerkofel), and down the Günther Messner Steig

2100m uphill, 3200m downhill , 43 Km, about 7 hours, Technique: Highly demanding

Parking in St. Andrä (Sant'Andrea) in the car park of the Plose mountain cableway, then by cableway up to Val di Cecina (Valcroce)

Follow the gravel road, pass the Rossalm. Approx. 800 meters after the Rossalm begins the trail adventure, partly over bridges and small walkways down to the SP29. This is followed to the Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch) and then around the Peitlerkofel over the Gömajoch. In the Malga Vaciara hut you can stop. Then up to the Alte Vie delle Dolomiti (Dolomiten Höhenweg) 2 and into the Günther Messner Steig. The climb is technically very demanding, but a real hammer! After a while you meet the SP29 again, and on trails parallel to the road, you go over to Afers, and from there on endless trails back to St. Andrä.

Day 2, Rio di Pusteria (Mühlbach), Maranza, Gitsch mountain, Gitsch, Vals, Jochtal, Stoanamandl, Spinges

1000m uphill, 2500m downhill, 34 Km, about 5 hours, technique: Moderate

A trip to relax with only a few self-paced altitudes.

Parking in Rio di Pusteria at the cable way. Then take the cable car over Maranza (Meransen) to the Gitschberg at 2100m. Over a beautiful trail and a small ascent to the little Gitsch, pass the Moser hut and over to Vals. There again with the cable car up to the Jochtal mountain station. Over to the Stoanamandl at 2118m, and then downhill on endless trails. For a while, we continue along a dirt road downhill just before Spinges, and immediately after the bridge into a steep trail. It is not used often, a bit steep, but worth it. After Spinges, we continue on beautiful trails to Rio di Pusteria (Mühlbach)-

Day 3, Lazfons (Latzfons), Rifugio Chiusa (Klausnerhütte), Santa Croce di Lazfons (Latzfonser Kreuz), Alpe di Villandro (Villanderalm), Silvermine Villandro

2000 m uphill, 2000 m downhill, 33 Km, about 5 hours, technique: moderate, condition: very high (1500 m uphill at a piece!)

Parking at Gernstein castle in the Rio Tina valley (Tinnebachtal). You can also cycle the tour from Chiusa (Klausen), but then has another 350 m uphill extra.

Follow the Tarer street up to an altitude of 1600m, then on gravel at the Rifugio Chiusa (Klausnerhütte) (stopover possibility) and finally very steep to the Santa Croce di Lazfons (Latzfonser Kreuz) hut (possibility to stop). A little further uphill until you reach the maximum height of 2350 m below the Jocherer mountain. From here you go downhill, over a great high plateau. Possibility to stop at the Alpe di Villandro (Villanderalm) and then on the madness trails to the old silver mine Villander. A dream view is here, before it goes over further super trails down to the castle Gernstein. Madness! 🙂 🙂

Day 4, St. Andrä (Sant'Andrea), mountain cable way Plose, Plose Telegraph, Ochsenalm hut

850 m uphill, 1800 m downhill, 16 Km, about 3 hours, technique: Moderate

So to speak almost the home trail of the Brixen mountain bikers. Start in St Andrä at the valley station of the Plose cable car. With the gondola up, and then on gravel to the Rifugio Plose (stop-over option). Then pass the old telegraph station and on the rim down (madness view!) To the Ochsenalm hut (stopover option). Then always on the high way to the south, but not to the mountain station Plose, but before on a small singletrail into the valley. At the valley station there is a bike wash station and several possibilities for refreshment.
